Packaging // Refined
Packaging is a massively influential part of selling a product. Whether a product has been purchased online or in-store, the packaging is the first thing the customer sees, and it often leaves them with a lasting impression. As such, product packaging shouldn't ever be overlooked. The importance of packing has become more prominent over recent years, with an influx of people sharing gift opening' and'unboxing' moments across social media.
This rising trend shows that well made, branded packaging can be an incredibly powerful marketing tool.
Eye-catching and impactful print ensures your product has optimal shelf presence. Windles understand that packaging sells the product, highlighting key values and specifications of what is inside. Whether you choose folded-carton or rigid boxes, all of our techniques and finishes are available to you to design with.
Finishes & Techniques
-
THE most creative print process you can design with. Imagine being able to create your packaging with any, and as many metallic colours as you want, all in a single print-pass. Forget choosing a foil colour from a pre-chosen swatch book…make your own metallic colours!!
In a single pass, and with ultra-accurate registration, we are able to print a fine layer of shiny silver foil anywhere within the B1 sheet. You can design which elements of your imagery you would like to be metallic. From there, the sheet continues its journey through the remaining units on the litho press, applying inks over the foil areas turning them into fantastic shiny colours. -
A classic way to enhance or embellish your product is to sculpt and mould the surface. Like everything at Windles, we have taken embossing and debossing to a new level (no pun intended). Working with skilled die-makers and machine operators has allowed us to explore the very boundaries of crisp, deep and precise embossing.
Try embossing printed designs, blind embossing or apply to our in-line Cold Foil - it really does transform your greeting card or product. A sharp emboss will pick up some beautiful highlights and shadows, adding depth and interest to a 2D surface. -
Hot-foiling, or foil-blocking as it is sometimes called, is a classic production process to add an extra effect to your design. Using a foil die and your chosen foil colour, we very carefully heat the die and press this through the foil, leaving the impression on the surface of your product.
Foil dies can be generated flat, textured or raised that all offer differing visual solutions. We can advise on these if you would like more information.
The choice of foil is quite extensive, far too many to list on our website, so it is well worth getting in touch to check availability. Foils can range from highly metallic, ultra-matt or perhaps you'd like a fluorescent. -
Our folder-gluer is capable of converting a wide range of solid coated and uncoated boards, at remarkable speeds. Not only super-fast, but highly accurate too, giving perfect consistency from 1 to a million.
As a die-cut and creased blank passes through a folder-gluer, a selection of specially positioned guides, rotary hooks, and other devices fold its panels to their required positions while a precise delivery system applies a hot-melt adhesive to key points on the blank. We can assist and advise on these glue areas whilst you are designing.

To create a tactile and visually exciting surface pattern, take a look at our Deep Texture Varnish. This process originated from the need to develop a varnish that had the depth of a silkscreen varnish, but the fine detail of a litho print.
Creating very fine parallel lines in the varnish, causes light to refract of the surface. Combine this with selected areas that have varied light angles and you can create a surface that shimmers and 'flips' as the light catches the different textures. -
The PMS uses pre-determined, published colour formulas to create a large number of ink colours. PMS stands for Pantone Matching System®, and is a standardized color reproduction system. Similar to the paint swatch guides you find at your favorite paint store, the pantone color chart contains thousands of color swatches created from a palette of basic colors. Each color has a 'PMS' number assigned to it. These numbers are used to identify the exact color needed. Using PMS inks is called spot color printing.
Windles Group can print and produce your products with the full gamut of Pantone colours. When you require a colour to match to another product or specific brand-guideline then Pantone inks are the way to go. -
Neon, or fluorescent inks as the are sometimes called, are based on pigments that have the ability to absorb ultraviolet light energy and immediately re-emit this within the visible spectrum. The effect of this is to cause the print to glow and appear very bright in daylight conditions.
When printing with Pantone Fluorescent inks, the following points should be considered:
Fluorescent inks should be printed on white or light backgrounds, which act as a reflector base, and enhance the fluorescence.
The level of fluorescence is proportional to the thickness of the pigment layer.
Pantone Neon Inks are available using the reference 801, 802, 803… through to 814. You can use these when setting up your designs and files. Neon inks can be added or supplemented with the conventional Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black process inks, however we do advise getting in touch whilst you are working on your new products so that we can advise on how best to use Neon inks.
Styles of Packaging

Folding cartons are adaptable packaging boxes which are produced by folding a single sheet of paperboard (or as popularly known as cardboard) into a box template and die-cutting it. Folding cartons are a wonderful packaging alternative to plastic since they are both cost effective and adaptable and Windle have been developing carton design for many years. Combined with our fine print qaulity and extensive high-quality finishing, cartons are an excellent way to present, protect and deliver product to your customers.
Beautiful packaging offers high shelf appeal and a great extension of your brand. Pack opening has become very much part of the customer experience, making your product memorable from the very start. Carton boxes that are well-designed and structured help to establish your brand as one of quality and consistency in the minds of your customers. They also give you plenty of room to display your marketing messaging. By choosing eco-friendly packaging, you may tell your story, highlight the benefits of your product, give a promotion, or even show off your social responsibility efforts.
